Since the beginning of the year, Palanga Airport has been actively increasing passenger flows and becoming more modern and convenient. The airport will welcome the aviation summer season with renewed facilities. Lithuanian Airports has allocated approximately €750,000 for terminal modernization projects.

"Palanga Airport plays a key role in connecting Western Lithuania with the world, and it is evolving to enhance the passenger experience, improve operational efficiency, and boost sustainability indicators. Progressive changes are happening across our entire airport network to ensure a consistently high level of service quality for all passengers flying to and from Lithuania," says Arnas Dūmanas, Head of the Infrastructure Department at Lithuanian Airports (LTOU).

According to LTOU data, in February of this year, the number of passengers choosing Palanga Airport for their travels increased by 44% compared to the same period last year, reaching nearly 30,000 passengers.

Smart Climate Control

Dūmanas notes that the modernization of Palanga Airport’s terminal and surrounding areas will not only optimize building operational costs but also significantly improve the passenger experience. Travelers will notice these changes soon, as the aviation summer season flights begin at the end of March.

One of the key projects nearing completion is the modernization of the terminal’s heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Additionally, pipeline repairs have been carried out. New ventilation and cooling equipment, along with advanced automation solutions, will ensure optimal indoor comfort.

According to Dūmanas, an advanced system is being fine-tuned to automatically maintain a comfortable temperature inside the terminal, enhancing the well-being of every passenger. The system is expected to be fully operational by mid-April, marking the completion of this €515,000 project.

Indoor Innovations Protect from Sun Glare

The benefits of automation at Palanga Airport will also be felt by those near the terminal’s windows. Special automated façade blinds are being installed, integrated into the airport’s central building management system. These blinds will regulate heat and light inside the terminal, lowering automatically in bright sunlight to prevent glare for passengers and staff. This feature will also help keep the terminal cool during hot summer days, reducing energy consumption. On cloudy days or after sunset, the blinds will automatically retract without requiring manual adjustments. The investment in this upgrade amounts to €124,000.

Arriving passengers will also notice a newly installed glass canopy, strategically placed to protect them from wind and precipitation. Positioned at a key corner of the terminal, the canopy will also act as a barrier against cold air entering the building, reducing heat loss. This project, set for completion in March, is valued at €109,000.

According to Lithuanian Airports, Palanga Airport handled 378,000 passengers last year, nearly 25% more than in 2023. In total, more than 4,300 flights were operated at Palanga in 2024—a 15% increase compared to the previous year.
